Project 1: Forming Groups

Note: The last part of this project (setting up your vitual machine) can take a long time to complete. Do not wait until group formation to begin setting up your virtual machine.

GitHub Account

Submission: by email to the grader.

Sign up for an account at GitHub. You can also request an educational student discount, which gives you Pro features for free.

Send the grader an email with you GitHub user id.

Group Formation

Submission: by completing CATME survey.

You will be assigned to a home group of 4 (or 5) for working on projects. In addition, you will also be assigned to a technology team for working on tasks. This group and team assignment will be done using the CATME tool.

Each technology team will be exploring in greater depth a library or framework in one of the following areas:

Mug Shots

Submission: by email to the instructor. Each student should submit their own.

Send the instructor an email with a jpg attachment containing a picture of yourself. Please make sure the attachment satisfies all of the following requirements:

  1. The picture should be head-only (or head-and-shoulders) so that you are easily recognizable.

  2. The subject of the email should include the course number and section (ie lecture time slot) in which you are enrolled

  3. The filename of the jpg attachment should be your last name (all caps) with extension jpg (all lower case). For example, a student named Jane Doe would attach a file called DOE.jpg.

  4. The image should be 150 pixels wide by 180 pixels high. You can use tools such as gimp or gqview to resize and crop images to these dimensions.

These pictures will not be posted online, they will be used only for my personal reference to help me learn your names.

Environment Configuration

Submission: by email to the grader. Each student should submit their own.

Follow the instructions from the class web site, under VM Setup, to create a virtual machine on your home machine. Once you have completed the setup, take a screenshot showing the virtual machine desktop with a terminal window open and running the last command in the instructions:

$ rails server

Please use the subject "CSE 3901 lab 1 screenshot" for your email to the grader.
